Finding the best Small Business Ideas for 2012 – follow these tips

It does not really matter if you already have an existing small business, or you are hunting for a new business idea for 2012, but if you follow these tips that I give you here you should be able to pinpoint which are the hottest small business ideas for 2012

Small Business Ideas for 2012Doing the correct research is the key to having a successful product or to being able to redirect your business into 2012 so that you are getting your product or service out there in front of the strongest markets.

I have written a report that details these research methods out in more detail, and will add the link that you can use to go and get a copy of the report if you are so inclined, but you might find that I have outlined the basics here in this post in enough detail.

Here are the steps that you need to apply to ensure that your small business ideas for 2012 will make you money

These steps will apply to an existing business and equally fit into your search for a new business idea. Remember that some of these research methods would be more effective for some ideas, while other of my suggested methods would require that you do deeper research into that specific method.

Step One – Choose you general niche  for your small business idea.

Almost all of the suggest steps that I show you here would be applicable to choosing a niche first as a general search or research project. If you are wanting to be certain that the niche that you are delving into for your business has enough interest or rather enough people searching for that item or service you should do the steps twice, once to check a few possible niches and then a second time to look into sub sections in that chosen niche.

To explain better, lets say that you wanted to start up a small shop in a local shopping center.

You would use my methods to get a list of the best (or the most examples) stores in the shopping centres that you use for your research. Then you would do my steps to research which of those shops or store products are getting the most promotion and exposure. Then you would use online tools to see what levels of inquiry are being done for those specific items.

This should get your list down from a broad based variety to a small list that has the most potential.

To give you an example here, I have just finished reading my local Sunday newspaper, and it struck me that the was an extraordinarily high level of adverts for watches. Now normally throughout the year there are not nearly as many adverts for watches, but it is Christmas time and gifts are obviously being pushed right now.

BUT this leads me to wonder why – if the market has such a strong gift potential during gift season – why is it not strongly marketed during the other 11 months of the year. There is a strong possibility that a specialist website or store for watches might not be that competitive during the other months, and could be a great business idea.

Naturally I would go and apply all my own steps to check those trends during the rest of the year.

So, to recap, do this system twice if you do not yet have a niche that you are wanting to start up your 2012 small business idea in. First to check the niche and then to delve deeper.

Step two – Take the niche that you want to do business in, and dig deeper.

Here you would have a general niche, like weight loss, or hair products/hair care, landscaping, craft or hand made gifts etc. Use the next steps to get a better idea of the potential of your market.

Step three –  Start by using the free Google keyword research tool

This is the most important step by far. In fact I would go as far as saying that if you only used this step, your business idea for 2012 would have the strongest chance of success.

You need to search for the free Google keyword tool and use that to search for your products and ideas in fine detail. I have written a page on using this tool and you can go and read that here – Small business ideas for 2012 using the keyword tool

Step Four –  Use trending website

By seeing what the hot trends are – in some cases – your products could be slightly swung into a different direction if necessary.

Step Five – Use twitter

These days Twitter is almost as powerful as the strongest search engines and by searching twitter for information you can see the topics and items that are getting the maximum exposure and take advantage of that information

Step Six – Go to Spyfu and check the strength of your market

Spyfu is a very powerful website and can give you a lot of details regarding the power of your chosen niche.

You can see how much people are prepared to pay fro advertising and how many different companies are competing in that market.

Please do not think that if there is a lot of competition that this is a bad thing, and that you must go elsewhere, as the more competition there is the better your chances are to make money.

This level of competition shows that there is money to be made there.

Step Seven – Your TV

I know that you might be shaking your head here, but for certain niches and products you can get very valuable information from watching what appears on your tv.

In fact it would pay you to make notes regarding the “free” tv and “paid” tv differences and see where the money is.

Step Eight – News, newspapers, magazines and other print media.

Remember that if people are paying money to print newspapers and pay for advertising in those publications – then there is definitely a market for that item.

The trick here is to use the keyword tool, and find out how to target a tighter and more searched for niche for those potentially profitable products.

Another observation here is that very often, those guys who are paying so much money to advertise their products and often the well established guys, and they are relying on their branding to bring them business (and it does in a big way) but have no clue as to what changes are taking place under their noses online as far as targeting exact niches go.

Take advantage of this fact

Step Nine – Shopping centers

Now I referred to this in the beginning of this post, and it can be very powerful as far as seeing what people are buying goes.

Sit on your bum at a busy mall and watch what goes on.

You will be surprised what you can pick up when you start to look with a marketing viewpoint and not just a normal shopping frame of mind.

Step Ten – Yellow pages

Yes I know that this is old school, and is dying fast, but remember that it still has a lot of “keywords” that you can search for and add back into the Googler keyword tool and see where the real numbers are going.

In fact any website that is a form of “classified” directory like bid-or-buy can give you a very clear idea as to what is popular and worth chasing.

Step eleven two fifteen – those are in my report

While the remaining steps are helpful I have covered the most important ones here above.

You are welcome to go and buy a copy of my report that details all this in finer detail
